Maps Worth Buying

March 24, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS for Life

I’m taking a minute today to post something of interest only to a small percentage of my readers.  But if you need these, you need these big time.   Perhaps you have a son or daughter in Iraq or subject to going.  Perhaps you have employees who might have to go in-country.  Perhaps you’re thinking of taking a job there yourself .. plenty of opportunities.  Perhaps your church is sending relief workers or you know an aid worker or missionary there.  If you know anyone in Iraq, this is important.

Anyone in Iraq needs the maps.  I know quite a bit about the maps officially available to US troops … I’m not allowed to say much … but I will say these are so head and shoulders above what most military systems provide that it is night and day.

Go here and read about it.  This is not a freebie, the company who took the risk and made the effort needs to be compensated for their work.  This is not an affiliate link or an ad .. I have no interest in this company and am not making any money on this .. I’m publishing this to help save lives.

March 23, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Help or Hurt, GPS for Business

Skyhook Wireless has released new software, called Loki, which turns any Wi-Fi laptop into a GPS. Sort of. They used Wi-Fi locators and GPS receivers to precisely locate 5 million Wi-Fi signals in major American cities and link them to longitude and latitude data from the GPS satellites. The software uses those signals to pinpoint the location of the user. It then can offer advice about restaurants, shops and services in the area….

NYC Cabbies Add New Reason To Hate GPS

March 22, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Help or Hurt, GPS for Business

Along with cost and other concerns already raised about global positioning systems comes a new issue: discrimination.

New York City taxi cab drivers have added a new complaint to the list of reasons they oppose planned installation of GPS.

Members of the GPS systems could be discriminatory. The alliance gathered in Manhattan Monday, and some drivers complained that minorities – many of them Muslim – operate most of the cabs in New York City.

The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission decided in 2004 to require tracking systems in cabs. Members said the technology would improve customer service and streamline record keeping. They said riders could more easily retrieve lost items and drivers would not have to log their trips.

March 21, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Help or Hurt, GPS for Business

BY MATT FRIEDMAN

March 21, 2006 Many New York cabdrivers don’t want their every movement tracked, and some question the motivation behind an impending requirement for global-positioning systems in their cars, a drivers’ advocacy group says.

The New York Taxi Workers’ Alliance gathered on Houston Street in Manhattan yesterday, in front of an Indian restaurant popular with cab drivers, to rally against installation of GPS in cabs throughout the city….

Newsday.com has an interesting article today regarding a mandatory requirement that New York cabs join the world of the GPS tracked.

Can You Do This for Your Town?

March 21, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Successes, GPS for Business

I’m sure there’s a lot of times my posts seem a little too much attuned to following trucks around to save businesses money.  I do like to show some of the lesser known and intuitive uses of GPS.  Here’s an interesting interactive crime map for Chicago that’s well worth a look,

I pointed you to an already opened example of a search for crimes by zip code.  If you’re not familiar with Google Maps, note that you can pan the map to different areas by just clicking and dragging and move and zoom it with the clickable controls in the upper left corner.  The information can be displayed as a map, as a satellite image or a hybrid with the streets overlaid on the imagery.
