GPS Cell Phone with Sexual Predator Zone Alerts Helps Parents Keep Track of Loved Ones

May 02, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Help or Hurt, GPS Teens, GPS for Life

Company: CATS Communication, Inc.
Industry: Location-based Services (LBS)
Location: Irvine, CA, United States of America

Today’s world is busier and unfortunately scarier than ever, but now CATS Communication, an Irvine, California based company, is making it easier to keep track of loved ones so families can have greater peace of mind. Wonder Boy Foundation, an organization dedicated to educating kids and their families on protection techniques against predators, is proud to announce its endorsement of CATS Communication’s latest development in family protection technology: CATTRAX(TM). CATTRAX(TM)(http://www.cattrax.us) is the most advanced “Location Based Service: that allows parents to keep track of loved ones through a GPS cell phone and even alerts them when their child is in a sexual predator zone.

Over 1 million children in the U.S. are reported missing each year. Another 270,000 are abducted by family members, and as many as 60,000 are abducted by non-family members. Add to that millions that are just not where they are supposed to be and that adds up to a lot of children unaccounted for by their parents….

You know every time I write one of these posts on child tracking I wonder if I’m overstating my case. But then I go to the control panel on my web host and find that again and again, this is what people search fir. It’s what’s on their minds; it’s what they want to learn about.

Taxi drivers told to turn on their GPS Tracking systems

May 02, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Help or Hurt, GPS for Business

Only 55 percent of taxis with the Bermuda Taxi Association are using GPS systems during peak Airport times.
The Transport Control Department reviewed taxi data, provided by BTA, in order to address recent concerns about service to the Airport.
The data revealed that of the 334 subscribers to the BTA GPS system only 183 taxis were using it. Rest of news article here:

This isn’t exactly earthshaking news to me. Months ago I wrote about the Bermuda Transport Control Department requiring all Bermuda taxis to install a standard GPS tracking and control system. Of course there was driver reluctance. Now, more than 330 systems are installed and in peak traffic times, nearly half of them aren’t in use.

Where’s Tim — Live GPS Tracking demo

May 02, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Successes, GPS Teens, GPS for Business, GPS for Life

Here’s a nice little site I came across yesterday. It may be a little busy since it was “Dugg” yesterday, but it seems to be running pretty well this morning … Where’s Tim

Use the history selection on the left-hand lower side to bring up Tim’s previous tracks … he appears to be at work as I write this, so he may not be moving around much.

Tim’s a software engineer at an interesting firm in Lawrence Kansas, EnGraph, and not (quite) a teen, but this system will give you a good example of the level of detail and response time you might get with a cell phone based tracking system for your teen.

More Eye Candy — gamedevmap

May 02, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS Successes, GPS for Life

Here’s a cute little visual aid I came across put up by a game development software company … to keep track of their competition perhaps?

I like it because it’s a special map projection (we talked about them here in the past) that does a much better job of showing the world on a computer monitor than most do.  There’ some “distortion” … but there’s distortion in every map, and with this one the ability to put a lot of data on screen with room to spare makes any “funniness” acceptable to me,

The other feature I like is that the designer used virtually all the screen real estate for the map.  Nothing turns me off quicker than the average mapping, or GIS or GPS tracking application where the map part of the screen has to compete with dozens of menu bars, navigation buttons and screen pixels where the publishing company just had to put their logo.

Memo … the map’s the thing.  If you do a great job like this featuring the map, I’ll remember you … I don’t need a big logo stealing pixels.

Remember there’s a lot more going on here than just a simple pin map.   Each color-coded dot on the screen is a query launcher for the database behind the map.  How much easier to click on the dot representing Sydney, for example, and get a list of developers in that city than to type the query in textual format.  (especially if you type like me ;-)
Of course you do have to know where Sydney is on the map … you do, don’t you?

Jessica’s Law initiative is misguided public policy? Only if you have your head in the sand!

May 01, 2006 By: Mr. GPS Category: GPS for Business, GPS for Life

I try not to write too much on the advantages of using GPS tracking technology to supervise the parole of sex offenders and other dangerous criminals … but every day it seems another misguided negativist seems to need to have her say. Considering that women, sadly of all ages, are the primary target of these sex offenders it’s truly amazing when ill-thought-out diatribes like this keep surfacing from seemingly well-intentioned, highly intelligent women.

Apparently Fourth District county Supervisor Gary Ovitt wants to enter a national contest and make San Bernardino County the county with the toughest sexual offender regulations. (‘‘S.B. preps for Jessica’s Law,” Daily Bulletin, April 21.)…

I guess my first comment is this is wrong thinking on the part of Supervisor Ovitt? I wish more County Supervisors and other public leaders wanted their constituencies in first place on something, and being the toughest county on sex crimes is far from a poor goal. I wonder what county the writer wants to be in first place instead of San Bernardino County? “Let’s root, root, root for the visitors”? Frankly I wish my County leadership wanted our county in first place on this issue. (more…)
