MADERA, Calif.—A trucking company will pay $9 million to the parents of two sisters who were killed in a highway accident involving one of its trucks in Madera County.
Seven-year-old Korren Radke and 2-year-old Chloe Baker of Coursegold died in June last year when a concrete pumper truck rear-ended the family car near the Rocky Cutout area on Highway 41.
The owner of the truck, Brundage-Bone Concrete Pumping, will pay the parents of the two victims to settle the wrongful death civil lawsuit in Fresno County Superior Court.
The California Highway Patrol says the truck driver was driving at an unsafe speed and was unable to stop when it hit the family car, which had stopped for a disabled vehicle on the highway. Full article here:
I don’t know the particulars on this crash and I am not going into them. I’m posting this message today, though, because I want you to think of yourself in the position of this company who had to pay that whopping settlement mainly because the Highway patrol said their truck was speeding. Maybe it was, but if you were in that pickle, would you know? For $9 million dollars you can equip about 1800 trucks and have change lest over. Would it be worthwhile sometime soon to be able to offer your own proof when accused?
And check out the business … concrete pumpers. How do they earn money for the company? By collecting use fees for the time they spend at the job site pumping concrete. Of course you do have an independent third-party proof that your drivers log the “for pay” time accurately, don’t you?

this has nothing to do with the highway patrol, the concrete trucks service records were doctored. The trucks rear drums shattered causing the truck to lose its stoping power. The driver also didnt know how to use the jake brake!no amount of money will replace korren!
Hi Craig,
Thanks for dropping by and for your comment. I realize this is an emotional issue for you, but I don’t think you read what I wrote. The Highway patrol _did_ claim the driver was traveling too fast … and the fact that he struck another vehicle proves that … a competent driver keeps his vehicle under control even with systems failures … that’s kind of my whole point that businesses should monitor their driver’s actions 24-7 to _avoid_ them getting into deadly situations … and I certainly never suggested that any amount of money can make up for a human life. My condolences on your loss.
