Here’s one of the more interesting ways to get your company out there in the world.  Pocket and dashboard GPS units have become pretty popular now, but in most cases their uses have been pretty private and personal.

Fred uses his mainly on weekends, goes fishing using the GPS to track his courses and marks his favorite fishing holes as “points of interest”.  Fred might or might not share his points of interest file with Barney, but certain Amy out in California and Ted in Florida will never get to know about Fred’s finds.

But what if Fred and Barney and Amy and Ted are all heading to the World Cup playoffs?  And what if you wanted your company to be memorable to all four of them?  Well, just cook up a “Points Of Interest” file for all the playoff stadiums, and not only will you be offering something of interest that costs you nearly nothing to produce, you’ll do your little part to reduce traffic congestion, increase road safety and, along the way, make firm friends of your down loaders, even if they don’t buy something at that particular time.

Locations/directions to Olympic venues, MLB fields NFL stadia, the possibilities seem only limited by imagination.  And for something even a little more business oriented than just viral goodwill?  How many chain stores and franchise companies have “store locators” on their web sites?  And why isn’t a “Point of Interest” file included as a download?  What could make more sense, since the potential customer is obviously on your site to find a store (don’t get much more of a pre-qualified lead than that) .. so make it easy for her to get there.

Ever notice how in Wal*Mart (ever wonder why the signs on the stores say “Wal*Mart”, but people always type it “Wal-Mart”?) they have a slick tie-in with the Rand McNally Road Atlas people?  You by the latest road atlas at a discount Wal*Mart price and the atlas includes all the thousands of Wal*Mart stores.  In case you think this is just an ego thing, among other “heavy” Wal*Mart and road atlas users are thousands and thousands of motor home users, typically senior citizens with fixed (but ample) incomes touring the US constantly in their multi-hundred-thousand dollar motor homes looking for “bargains” at Wal*Mart.  Wonder why the “Big W” isn’t sending those folks POI files

“The Power of Place” is becoming more and more powerful every day .. are you engaged yet?
