Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you this was coming. See: Perspective: E-tracking, coming to a DMV near you — Another Take On PAYD
The system in today’s article is a kewl tool no matter how you feel about being tracked. When I read articles like this from the UK I always wonder how come the US, which originally was a merchantile colony founded to supply cheap raw materials and unskilled labor to the greatest industrial nation on earth, got so far ahead of the UK. if they keep innovating like this, we’ll move back to early times for sure.
I’ve often commented about the lack of initiative and failure to focus on profit of US insurance companies. The ambulance at the bottom of the cliff instead of the preventive fence at the top. The main way US insurance companies make money is to have sweetheart deals with insurance commissions in most of the 50 states, coupled with a willing Congress who makes deals to exempt insurance companies on the tough issues, say nuclear power.
Obviously in the UK, the industry is a lot more forward looking. Take a look at this system and the advantages that the players get, all the while saving money:
- The owner/operator gets profesional tracking for business savings;
- The insurance company knows exactly what risks they are insuring;
- The police can use specific data for terror defense or anomymous consolidated data for highway safety;
- Planners can design tomorrow’s roads with accurate data, without spending a fortune on those silly little air hose across the road traffic spot counters;
- Speed limits can be set the way highway safety engineers have always said they should, by simply monitoring traffic and setting the speed limit at the speed about 75% of the drivers select;
- Taxing authorities can charge for actual miles driven making payments fair to all, and,
- Toll road authorities can charge for actual use without those silly windshield transponders.
I really could expand that list on and on, but this certainly gives you the gist of the idea. Ask your insurance agent when his or her company plans to move into the 21st century.
