Got A Chuckle When I Shouldn’t Have

I was looking at the web site of a large GPS Tacking organization tonight. Just after I left the business they were doing some partnering with the company whose products I used to handle and I was checking on what they might have rolled out new. They had an excellent little assessment quiz that every business owner ought to take … just 5 questions.

Go ahead, try it, no salesman will call

Interesting? What part do you think made me chuckle? Yep, the fact that four out of the five questions had an “I don’t know” response. I really ought to dig up some of my old contacts and see if they have any records on how many business owners honestly answer that way.

Honestly? Yep, because if you aren’t measuring with somebody’s tracking system, the “I don’t know” is the only honest response.

Anybody remember Smokey Yunick? You’ve seen him mentioned here a time or two. he’s one of my heroes and was a giant in the field of racing for many, many years.

Among his many other talents was a skill for, shall we say, “skirting the edges” of the rule book. Smokey seldom if ever out and out violated the rules, but the rule book was slim and Smokey’s imagination was rich. It may or not be true that he was heard to utter the phrase, regarding the NASCAR rule book, “It didn’t say I couldn’t”.

If you have employees out there driving around unmonitored, how many budding Smokey Yunick’s do you think you have amongst them? You can’t write it all down. And you can’t possibly know if the employees are following what is written, unless you measure, measure, measure.
