The ROI of GPS … What Time are My Drivers Starting Work and What Time are They Completing Their Shifts? (Part 5)

(Today’s Topic) What time are my drivers starting work and what time are they completing their shifts?
How many minutes of pre and post trip time are you paying for?
Are my drivers arriving on time for their deliveries?
Are my drivers making unauthorized stops?
How productive are my assets?
Are my sales representatives making their required customer calls?
Where are my miles going? Am I making full use of expensive assets?
What time are my drivers starting work and what time are they completing their shifts?
SatViz Incorporated recently conducted a pilot program for a nation-wide fleet. This fleet was almost completely “take home” vehicles. In other words, almost all the drivers took their vans home at night and started from their homes to the first customer visit directly. In some cases, they returned to their district office each night. But others didn’t visit their district office for weeks at a time.
This is a very efficient way for this company to operate. It allowed them to cover most of the entire US and Canada with a few more than 30 district offices. If the drivers had to report to a central location before starting and ending their day, the company would loose thousands of miles and hours in non-profit paid driving. They would also need parking and security for hundreds of trucks, otherwise provided by the employees themselves. However, since the drivers were paid hourly, the system lends itself to a lot of abuse.
100%, that’s right, each and every driver, who had the tracking system on their vehicles ’shaved’ at least 30 minutes or more a day off their hours actually worked. And remember, these were all employees who knew they were being measured. Little things like:
Entering a departure time on their pay record 15 or 30 minutes before departure;
Stopping for unauthorized and unintentionally company- paid breakfast stops, and
Reporting their quitting time 20 or 30 minutes after they were already
These time inaccuracies alone will save the client the total cost of the system in less than a year.
Do you have take home vehicles? Do you know you are paying only for time worked and not “paper time”? Do you know the vehicles are racking up only authorized miles for your business, and not towing a boat to the reservoir on Sunday (another actual finding). Believe me, what you don’t know can add up to way more than the cost of a GPS tracking system.
You can’t manage what you can’t measure!
